Louis Chan

Ivy and Louis Chan in Russia

I went to graduate school at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, following graduation from McGill.  I obtained a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in Summer, '72.  My family moved from Hong Kong to San Francisco where I settled.  I worked for a consulting firm for 1 year, then for Bechtel Corp. for 15 years.  At Bechtel, I took part mostly in the design of nuclear power plants and storage facilities.  I have been with Lawrence Berkeley National Lab the past 18 years, doing design and construction management.

I have been married to Ivy for almost 30 years.  She recently took early retirement from AT&T.  Our daughter Karen is 27.  She was educated at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Cambridge, UK.  She works in financing for the utility company Pacific Gas & Electric Corp.  Our son Oliver is 24.  He graduated from University of California at Davis and worked 1 year in investments.  He is pursuing his master degree in accountancy and will graduate in Dec., '06.

Outside of work, my great interest is history and travel.  Fortunately Ivy shares my passion.  Our more recent travel was to China in Nov., '05.  We went to Henan Province, the cradle of Chinese civilization.  We also journeyed to Shandong Province where Confucianism originated and so is considered China's Jerusalem.  In Jun. '06, we took a Russian river cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg.  It was an amazing 2 weeks of immersion in Russian history, culture, music and dance.
