CAREER
- 1971-73 MBA….McGill
- 1973-75 Imperial Oil….Toronto head office…long range planning for refining division.
- 1975-79 Imperial Oil….Sarnia refinery…..loved Sarnia contrary to its reputation, first management experience.
- 1979-85 Dome Petroleum (as in "big, bad….")….Calgary….most intense learning of my career as our enormous problems were featured on the national television news and newspapers day after day after day….fabulous experience in business and people fundamentals.
- 1985-2001 Canadian Hunter Exploration….Calgary….moved from CFO to COO to CEO, very successful turnaround and growth story, great people to work with, loved the job, acquired by a large US independent for $3.3 Billion at end of 2001, shareholders thought management had done a good job- very satisfying.
- 2002-06 Esprit Energy Trust….Calgary…CEO, turnaround situation, good people, reasonable success, challenging job but satisfying again, retired at AGM this past May (2006).
- 2006- Remain on two public (TSX) Boards of Directors as well as Board of Governors of Mount Royal College (10,000 students) in Calgary .
PERSONAL
- 1971 Married Barbara….many of you will remember her as we dated all through university.
- 1977 First son, Michael, born in Sarnia
- 1980 Second son, Jonathan, born in Calgary
- 1992 Barb decided she had had enough of me and we had a very emotional but extraordinarily civilized divorce…Barb remains teaching in Calgary and has been happily "remarried" for many years.
- 1995 Married Jane who also had two sons from a previous marriage
- 2006 Jane is still putting up with me….Michael (my oldest son) is working with BC Hydro in Vancouver and was married last month, Jonathan (my youngest son) is finishing up a PhD at UBC in Vancouver, Jane's oldest son has a degree from U of Calgary and is doing post grad work in Victoria, Jane's youngest son is working toward a degree and is the only one of the boys who is currently living with us.
Other interests include travel (off to India next month and Africa next year), boating on the west coast, golf (anywhere), photography (of everything except golf….too depressing) and, most importantly, anything involving one or more of our four sons!
